UK Family Trip Reports
November 2007 London, UK Mom, Kids Ages 10,8 5
My kids and I spent a few days visiting London. We stayed with family in the South End. We used the trains and tube system to get around. The kids had a great time looking at the tube maps and navigating our way around. The first day we headed over to Buckingham Palace. We had a wander around and watched the changing of the guard. That was lots of fun! After that we strolled through St James Park. We stopped for a hot chocolate and then the kids played in the playground. We had fun watching the ducks, swans and pelicans in the water. After that we crossed over to the horse guards and watched a show there. Kids loved seeing the horses all dressed up! We then went for dinner at a local pub and had fish and chips. Delicious! After dinner we headed to the London Eye. The kids were quite excited to go on it. We bought tickets and had no line up. We had beautiful views of the London Skyline all lit up! We watched some street performers on the way back to catch the tube home.
The next day we headed back into town and wandered around Trafalgar Square. The kids had fun chasing the pigeons. We went to Piccadilly Square and then visited Hamley's toy store. The kids had fun looking at all the toys. After this we headed to the London Dungeons. This was loads of fun-even my 5 year old daughter loved it. We explored the various rooms and really enjoyed the ride at the end! After that we checked out the fun gift shop and bought some silly souvenirs. After this we headed to a local pizza restaurant for dinner. We decided to walk across the Tower Bridge. It was fun to walk across this famous landmark and the kids sang London Bridge is falling down. The next day we stayed close to "home" and visited a local park. It was lots of fun checking out the playground equipment that was different then here in Canada. We visited a local sweet shop-where the kids checked out the candy and I stocked up on Galaxy chocolate (yum!). We wandered around the neighborhood and ended up at an old fort. The kids had fun exploring this. We headed home for a delicious roast dinner. On our last day in London we headed back to the River Thames and went on a boat tour up the river. It was great fun to see the city from the boat. After that we headed to the London Aquarium. The kids liked it but I found it a bit run down and have definitely seen better ones. We then walked to have a look at Big Ben. we stopped for some curry. We wandered around and did some souvenir shopping. We had a nice time in London-it definitely isn't cheap. We spent quite a bit just in transportation but were able to save on some of the admissions with some 2 for 1 passes. I think we just scratched the surface and would love to head back in the summer months when it is a bit warmer.
