Thailand Family Trip Reports

Single Mom Kids ages 11, 9, 6 April 2008
I lived in Japan as a kid and traveled throughout Asia at that time. Thailand was my favorite country so I really wanted to bring my children to visit Asia. As a single mom I was a bit nervous to travel across the world with 3 kids in tow. But it all went smoothly and now my kids love Asia too. (We also visited Malaysia, Bali and Cambodia on this trip). We flew Cathay Pacific which was amazing. I was not looking forward to our 24 hour travel time but it was fine. The kids did their activity books, watched movies and played games on the seat front tv. We arrived in Bangkok and headed to our hotel . We stayed at the New Siam II in a triple room. The hotel was quite basic but it had an excellent location close to Khao San road , a pool and tv (great for jet lag when you are up at 3 am!!). We enjoyed our first delicious Thai meal- pad thai, spring rolls and green curry chicken. The kids went for a swim and then we headed to bed. We were up extra early from jet lag and had banana pancakes for breakfast. We headed to the river to try and catch a river taxi but I couldn't find the right spot to catch one. So we instead just looked at the river..lol. We caught a taxi to the Grand Palace and wandered around the shops outside while we waited for it to open. We explored the buildings and temples for a couple hours. It brought back memories of when I visited as a kid! When the kids had enough of the temples and the heat we headed back to the hotel for a swim and to relax. We fell asleep in the afternoon (bad idea!!) from the jet lag. We awoke in the evening had dinner and went for a walk. It was Songkran (water festival) so we joined in the fun. We bought some water guns and the kids had a blast spraying everyone and being sprayed. In the morning we had a private tour booked so we got up early.
We headed to the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market. Again flash backs from visiting as a child. My children loved the boat ride through the canals. We drank fresh coconut juice and ate chicken satay and banana fritters. Yum! We did a bit of shopping in the markets and from the boat. After that we drove for another hour and a half to ride the elephants. This was great fun! The kids loved it and they all had a chance to ride on the neck of the elephant. I declined! No thanks the chair is good for me! The elephants went for a dip in the river and we all laughed when it blew water with its trunk. This was a long but fun day!
The next day we headed to Chatuchak market. We explored this market-bought lots of great stuff. Beautiful Thai art, clothes, souvenirs and a hammock. The kids all got a cheap watch and I don't think any survived to the end of our trip! That night we headed to Khao San Road. The kids got henna tattoos and we had a delicious Thai dinner. We wandered around and enjoyed the sights. On the way back to the hotel we stopped for a snack of deep fried insects. OK OK-only my son ate them, ok it was one, ok maybe it was more like half of one. The next day we headed out to Penang, Malaysia. We had a great time in Bangkok although we were suffering from major jet lag! I definitely want to head back to Thailand and explore a little more-Chiang Mai and Phuket look great!
