Dominican Republic Family Trip Reports

Palm trees in Punta Cana

Mom
Kids ages 6 & 8
November 2005

I was looking for a cheap last minute trip and found a deal to the Casa Marina Reef hotel in Sosua near Puerto Plata. This was our first trip to the Dominican Republic and we loved it. I was happy with the hotel. It is 3.5 stars and the property is older but it was great for my budget! There was nightly entertainment and the kids were able to participate. We spent a lot of time at the pool. The red flags were up most of the time on the beach. The kids went to the kids club a few times and had fun there. I loved that the resort was in the heart of the town and we could easily walk around.

We went shopping in the nearby shops and noticed the vibe is a lot more relaxed from the vendors then it is in the Jamaican markets. We walked to Sosua beach and took a glass bottom boat ride. The kids loved seeing the beautiful fish below. We also did a banana boat ride that was lots of fun. We ate lunch at the beach. It was the best meal of the trip. We had fried chicken, rice, beans and salad and it was really cheap!

There was a tour company a couple blocks from the hotel and it was very cheap. We did 2 tours. The first one we climbed the waterfalls with the guides. The guides were amazing and ensured the kids were safe all the way up although in retrospect I would not redo this tour with younger children but definitely if the kids were older kids and strong swimmers. The kids loved it though!

The next tour I was not so thrilled with. We went to a beach about an hour away and the water was too rough to swim in. We stopped at a fruit plantation. The fruit plantation really felt more like someone's backyard..lol. We also went to a farm and sat on a giant bull. It was a bit of a strange tour! It was nice to see the country side though.

We had a great inexpensive trip and would definitely like to return to the Dominican Republic again!
