How to travel during your Costa Rica family vacation

It is easy to travel around Costa Rica with kids. Many families rent a car. They are fairly cheap and you can get a GPS to help you navigate. We rented from Dollar Rent A Car in Liberia on our last trip and had no problems. The roads can be very bumpy and it is best to avoid driving in the nigh. You can also rely on taxis (as we did on our first trip).

Most hotels will be happy to arrange airport pickup and transportation to the activities. Most day tours will provide transportation from your hotel and back. You can also take the Interbus which is a tourist bus with door to door transportation between cities.

We used this to travel between La Fortuna and Manuel Antonio as it was much cheaper then a taxi. We had the bus to ourselves for most of the trip and the driver even stopped for bathroom breaks.

The weather in Costa Rica is a mix of sun and rain. Some areas have more of a rainy season then others. Be sure to pack raincoats for everyone and a couple pairs of shoes in case they get wet -nothing worse than soggy shoes! Rain boots are also a good idea if you plan to do any rainforest hikes vacation as they can get quite muddy. The boots will also provide protection from bugs and other jungle critters.

Be sure to sample the delicious Costa Rican cuisine on your travels. Your kids will love the sweet melons, papayas and pineapple. Fried plantain are also a great snack. Gallo pinto will soon be your kids favorite- mine couldn't get enough of it!

La Fortuna With Kids

la fortuna

La Fortuna is a great town to visit in Costa Rica. Arenal volcano is located here and it is one of the ten most active volcanoes in the world. There are natural hot springs here that you can visit with your family including some with water slides! Zip lining, horseback riding and hanging bridges nature hikes are some of the fun activities.

There are lots of great places to stay. You can stay in budget hotels in the town or one of the jungle lodges in the countryside. There are also Costa Rica family vacation resorts here with lots of fun activities for everyone to enjoy. You can even stay in your own private villa or in a treehouse hotel nearby.

Visit Sarapiqui

sarapiqui river

Sarapiqui was one of our favorite areas during our Costa Rica family vacation. This area is rich in natural attractions. No family travel to Costa Rica is complete with a visit to the rain forest. Your family can explore the rain forests in search of howler monkeys, poison dart frogs (be careful!) and strangler trees. You can also go white water rafting down the beautiful Sarapiqui river or visit a local tilapia farm for a delicious lunch.

There are some unique places to stay in Sarapiqui with your family. A rainforest eco-lodge is a great place for your family to experience life in the jungle. There are some budget friendly accommodations available too. You can even stay on a Costa Rican farm with the kids!

Manuel Antonio With Kids

Manuel Antonio has the best of both worlds. It is home to a National Park that is full of wildlife such as sloths and monkeys and there are also beautiful beaches where you can relax with your family. Take a family yoga class, go para-sailing or do the Kids Saving the Rainforest Tour on your Costa Rica family vacation.

You will have lots of choice for great places to stay on your family holidays. There are budget accommodations in nearby Quepos as well as five star resorts with all the amenities. There are also jungle cabins where your kids might see the monkeys playing nearby. One of the coolest places to stay is a converted airplane overlooking the jungle!

Tamarindo & Guanacaste Region With Kids

If you are flying into the Liberia airport, there are some interesting places to visit in the Guanacaste Region. There are several rainforest hotels and eco lodges that are perfect for families. Hit one of the many beach towns along the coast. Tamarindo is a surfers paradise, great for children that want to learn! Or stay in one of the more laid back villages along the coast.

Some of our favourite hotels for kids:

There is lots of fun to be had in this area. Horseback with the kids, learn to surf or even make your own pottery in Tamarindo. Stop by Las Pumas, an animal rescue center for a visit.
